For Diego, acting is also a way of understanding the world. With the premiere of Colisión on HBO Max, he opens up about power, vulnerability, and masculinity—subjects that go beyond fiction and have become part of his philosophy on life.

L’Beauté Homme: You’re experiencing one of the most visible moments of your career. Do you feel like you’ve finally reached the place you were working toward, or are you just getting started?

Diego Klein: No, I feel like I’m just getting started. That doesn’t mean I’m not happy with where I am right now. But eventually, I’d like to become a producer and a director, and I know that will come later. I feel like this exposure might help me get there, figure out who I want to work with, and approach my career in a different way. So, for me, this is just the beginning.

What attracted you most to stepping into Colisión and exploring a world shaped by power, competing interests, and complex family dynamics?

Succession is my favorite show, so this whole world of power and complex relationships is something that really interests me. I love Mexico, I love Mexican culture, and telenovelas have always had such a strong influence on us; I feel like they’re part of our culture. I’ve also always been fascinated by power. I studied Philosophy and, in fact, I wanted to write my thesis on Foucault and his ideas about power relations. It has always interested me because I think power can corrupt anyone, especially within those kinds of circles.

It’s also exciting to play characters who inhabit worlds you don’t normally have access to in real life. We’re regular people; we’re not running corporations. Suddenly, you get to see what’s at stake for these people, what their interests are, and how those dynamics work. I find that really interesting.

How much of your background in Philosophy is still present in the way you understand both your characters and the world around you?

A lot. I really believe that the specific can lead you to the universal: when you talk about the micro, you’re also talking about the macro. When you look at something as part of an ecosystem—even in acting—you understand that your character is actually there to tell many different stories and represent something much bigger. There can be a social critique behind it.

When you understand that social critique, I think you can ultimately convey it through your character because you can see the bigger picture. Philosophy broadened the way I see things. I look at everything almost like a map and think, “Okay, this is my character’s chess game.” And once I understand that, I can be much more specific when it comes time to play the character.

Hablemos de Matías. ¿Qué hay de él en ti?

Muchas cosas.

Let’s talk about Matías. How much of him do you see in yourself?

A lot. First of all, I think Matías is someone who wants to prove that he’s good enough, and that’s something that has really shaped me too. I was very mischievous, pretty wild growing up, and that led to a point where almost no one believed in me. So I had to work really hard to prove myself. When I first read Matías, I thought, “Of course.” He has worked incredibly hard to prove that he can live up to his family’s legacy, to Zoé, and to what everyone expects of him. And that also works against him.

I’ve experienced that myself because it makes you feel like you can never really relax, like you always have something to prove. That can lead you to make some questionable decisions because you become so attached to not losing that status, constantly thinking, “How do I hold on to this?” I think it has also been a huge lesson for me personally: learning to let go and say, “That’s not who I am. I am not my achievements.”

You’ve spoken about an unexpected experience that ended up changing the direction of your life. After everything that came from it, is that rebellious Diego—the one who breaks the rules—still there?

I’m definitely still breaking the rules. I think what that experience did was give my life—and my relationship with art—a sense of direction and purpose. Obviously, I play a lot of roles where I have no control over the writing or the social commentary the series is ultimately trying to make, but I can still bring my own personal social critique to what I do.

To me, art really is an act of revolution, and it changes people in one way or another. So I think all those difficult experiences—the whole thing with the plane and everything else—gave me something to stand for.

At L’Beauté Homme, we talk a lot about masculinity and how it’s being redefined. What does masculinity mean to you, and how do you think your idea of it has changed over the years?

My idea of masculinity is almost the opposite of the traditional idea of what a man is supposed to be. To me, a confident man isn’t someone who imposes himself on others; he’s someone who has a dialogue, who listens. He’s not that cliché of the leader who walks in and says, “I’m in charge”. This new masculinity—and real confidence—is about not having to prove anything to anyone. You’re secure enough in who you are that you don’t need to pretend you’re the one who has to be in control.

Vulnerability has also been really important for me. Like a lot of men, I grew up struggling to show certain vulnerable parts of myself. When I’m going through something terrible, I find it incredibly difficult to share it or talk about it. I always want to deal with it on my own. Then, once the storm has passed, I’m like, “Wow, I was really going through hell.” That’s something I really want to work on. I wish men could communicate much more openly and understand that it’s okay. Nothing bad happens when you let yourself be vulnerable.

What’s harder for you: being vulnerable in front of the camera or away from it?

Away from it. That’s probably part of the reason I’m an actor. I found a way to hide that little secret, and I’m aware of it. I know I use acting to heal certain things in my personal life. Now I’m at a point where I think, “It’s great that I can do that in front of the camera, but I want to be able to do it away from it too.” I want to be able to cry in front of anyone and simply say, “Yeah, this is who I am.” Honestly, I think I’ve cried more in front of a camera than I have off-camera.

Ambition often has a negative connotation, but it’s also what pushes a career forward. How ambitious are you?

I think there are different levels of ambition. To me, mediocre ambition, if you want to call it that, is the kind that makes you willing to step over other people to get ahead. But there’s another kind of ambition. You can be incredibly ambitious and still have morals and ethics. That’s more difficult, and that’s the kind of ambition I’m interested in. It’s about asking myself, “How do I move forward without stepping on anyone?” How do I keep moving forward while bringing other people with me?

September also happens to be your birthday month. What does this moment represent for you, and what do you want from your next chapter?

September, being my birthday month, is always a time when I ask myself a lot of questions: Who am I? What have I done? Where am I going? Is what I’m doing really worth it? And I think this year marks the beginning of a stage where I’m going to start planting the seeds for new things. I don’t feel like the same Diego I was five years ago. I feel like I’ve gone through a transformation that, somehow, is coming full circle this year.
