Simple, warm, and deeply prepared, Óscar Armando Ortiz Gallegos —the man behind Carín León— gave us a conversation as honest as his music. An unfiltered talk about identity, music without borders, and what it means to bring his music to a stage like Sphere in Las Vegas.

Carín León arrived at the shoot the same way he approaches life: without poses and without distance. In just a few hours, it became clear that we were in front of someone who does not need noise in order to exist. His story is not one of luck: it is the story of a man who taught himself to play guitar, who fell in love with regional Mexican music through his Sonoran roots, and who built, brick by brick, a sound that today has no comparison.

L’BEAUTÉ HOMME Growing up in Hermosillo means growing up surrounded by a very specific identity. What memories from your childhood do you feel still live within your music?

CARÍN LEÓN So many. From the sound to the mood of my videos and covers, everything has to do with Hermosillo. Growing up surrounded by those landscapes —where you see more cacti than people— marks you deeply. When you go out into the world, you realize the richness that was always right in front of you, and that makes you revalue everything: the flavors, the smells, the weather, the simplest things.

Is that why you still live in Hermosillo?

It is not intentional, I simply find it hard to adapt to another place. From the food to the weather, everything there feels familiar to me. Besides, I believe I am the right person to tell Hermosillo’s story through my music. I am very much in love with that place, and I hope to live there for the rest of my life.

Before becoming Carín León, there was Óscar Armando. Who were you before the stages, and what role did music play in your everyday life?

Music has always been my life. There was always music in my house, and for me it is inseparable from any daily activity. I never thought I would do this professionally. It was something that accompanied me through every moment, good and bad. But when I began to feel the need to create, to let things out, I discovered regional Mexican music in depth and all of its culture. That is when I understood that our local sonic identity is very different, and I began to use it as the foundation of my project.

You taught yourself to play guitar and began performing in small spaces. What was that process like?

With little books my dad would buy. Later, I had a teacher in high school who put together a group. When we were hired for the first time, the teacher left and there was no guitarist. I had already spent the advance, so in 15 days I had to learn the entire repertoire by practicing five or six hours a day. That is how I learned, by force.

Was there any artist or album that made you think, “I want to dedicate myself to this”?

Not really. I never had the intention of becoming an artist. I have always liked making my own path. Of course, I have references from many artists, from different genres, but rather than wanting to be like someone else, I have always tried to build my own sound.

That shows. Your music is full of influences —country, jazz, blues— that give your voice a very particular identity…

It is something very natural. I do not think, “I am going to sing this way because it is salsa or rock.” It has to do with everything I have listened to over the years. I believe you can do everything without losing your essence, as long as there is good taste. For me, music is simply music, without limits.

You have collaborated with artists from very different worlds, from Maluma to C. Tangana and the one and only Alejandro Sanz. What do you look for emotionally or creatively in a collaboration, and how do you decide who to share a song with?

Many of them are idols to me. I go in with the intention of learning, of adding to the history of music, and also of fulfilling something for the kid who used to listen to them. It is also important that there is something that resonates with you as an artist. Today, the industry can shift the focus, but for me there must always be a real meaning behind it.

Soy orgullosamente mexicano, sonorense y hermosillense.

Representing Mexico before the world can feel like a source of pride, but also like a responsibility. What does carrying that cultural flag mean to you?

I am proudly Mexican, Sonoran, and from Hermosillo. I love carrying that flag, but I do not do it with the intention of imposing it. I do it by being myself. I believe that by being authentic, you are already representing Mexico. I prefer to say what I want to say, even if that means making mistakes or receiving criticism.

There are artists who change according to the industry; it seems like you made the industry come closer to your identity. How have you protected your essence within such a commercial environment?

Before, I used to watch what everyone else was doing to see what I would do. Today, I prefer to explore my own ideas. The problem, many times, is wanting to fit into trends. For me, everything starts with personal taste. Losing the fear of looking ridiculous, of criticism, and even accepting hate is what takes you to another level.

Beyond music, you project a different kind of masculinity: vulnerable, relaxed, and emotional. Do you think that has also been part of your connection with the audience?

Yes, I think there is a great opportunity there. Regional Mexican music has been very masculine, very traditional, and I like that too. But music is the space where men can express sensitivity without so much judgment. More than thinking about masculinity, I just want to express what I feel.

Your upcoming performance at the Sphere in Las Vegas marks an important moment in your career. What does it mean to you to reach such an iconic stage, and how do you imagine that experience for the audience?

I am very excited, and also nervous. It is an incredible place to express many things. More than being afraid of failing, I worry about not being able to express everything I want to. It is a collective achievement for Mexican music and, above all, an inspiration for new generations.

After a moment like that, with an achievement such as the Sphere, it is worth closing by asking: what comes next for you as Carín León, and what comes next for you as Óscar Armando?

As Óscar, I think it is about continuing to find calm amid all the noise this generates. Sometimes it is beautiful noise, sometimes you need silence, but I am learning to find peace and to enjoy each day. As Carín, there are many things coming. There is a new album on the way, returning to regional Mexican music but with a turn toward country, which is also a genre I am interested in exploring. There are also important dates coming, festivals —we are going to Japan in 2026— so it is going to be a very active year.

The most important thing is to live all those moments, make the most of them, and continue adding experiences, victories, and satisfactions.
