ISSUE FORTY SIX

For Rudy Pankow, acting was just a way in which he would tell stories. It was most likely his magnetic chill and talent that have brought him–and will take him places.

The actor isn’t phazed by his massive social media following–or anything really–and has a pretty good idea of what matters, and what keeps him grounded while this whirlwind takes place.

Surely we will be seeing Pankow lots and lots more as he continues to charm his way to stardom.

L’BEAUTÉ HOMME Did you always know you wanted to be an actor?

RUDY PANKOW No, I did not. There was a moment where I was just like, what do I really want to do? And the answer was, I just want to tell stories. I wasn’t very clear on if that was acting or if that was in a different form, a different way. When I faced that decision in senior year of high school, that’s when I asked myself that question.

So let’s talk a little bit about the show “Outer Banks”and what was that experience like and what did your character JJ teach you about yourself?

Well, JJ is the epitome of not overthinking, which can be very useful at times, and then it can also not be very useful at times. But for the most part, I think your gut will lead you through it, and that’s what that character taught me.

And about the experience, well, it was COVID when that show came out, five years, so it was like coming out of a cocoon into a world, two years into shooting a show. And then realizing that it was a thing. We were so quarantined for about a year and a half before we really even experienced the impact it had on our lives outside.

And how do you prepare for a character once you learn you got the part?

Well, I’ve been trained to go through certain steps before approaching any character. Learning where they come from, what societal class he’s in and knowing their background will teach you about their fears, dislikes, likes, and then you go into sensory work and where they potentially want to be, and it leads to that. Lines aren’t really lines, they are little clues to understanding where the person is. A lot of people think the line is a very important part of it, but they’re just a clue to who you are.

Do you have a hard time letting them after the work is done?

Yeah, sometimes. There was one character I did in a class, Jack, and he was very abusive and not really a good guy. And I was playing him in a safe space. We did it. We had fun. But yeah, after the class, I was shaken up and I just decided to go on a walk, and then the next day I went on another walk by myself for a while. And not to say that it was a bad thing, but I just did need some space.

¿Dónde estabas cuando te enteraste de que habías conseguido el papel de Scotty en “Reminders of Him”?
Hmm, buena pregunta.

Where were you when you learned you had gotten the part to play Scotty in “Reminders of Him”?

Hmmm, great question. I’m trying to remember the exact place I got the phone call. I’m not 100 percent certain, but I might’ve been on one of my walks, got a phone call.

When I was reading Scotty initially, I was immediately drawn to the character, because I’m attracted to characters that just want to live as fully as they possibly can, and so, the day I got the call, it was just like, “hell yeah, let’s be Scotty.”

Are there any similarities with Scotty that really resonated with you?

Yeah, I’m not quite sure if I’m as good as Scotty, but finding happiness in smaller things and the details and walking by something and going, “wait, what was that?” So you double check it and analyse it and laugh about it. And it could be as simple as a weird shape of a leaf or something; small things make a day bright.

So, you decide to tell stories by becoming an actor, but with it comes fame and social media. What’s your relationship with that side of your career?

Well, you gotta balance it. You have to, especially in a time where there’s so much happening now with AI, that issue is a very scary one, I mean it can be a very useful tool for a lot of people, but in the arts industry, I can see it being a very big problem. So I think the answer, to your question I would say that you have to put boundaries up for yourself. That’s a lot easier said than done. You have to be able to put your phone down or you need to set a time limit and question what it’s importance. At the end of the day it’s a tool and it has to be seen that way, rather than an extension.

And what’s your hidden talent?

Uh, hidden talent that I haven’t said before. Uh, okay, okay, I can read sheet music. But maybe that’s a random fact. But anyway, my dad was like, “you’re not going to be in this house without playing an instrument and the piano is where you need to start.” So I did that, and I’m not amazing at the piano. I actually moved to percussion after that, like three years into it. So I’m not a good piano player, but I can read sheet music.

What’s the best piece of advice you’d give to young people who want to get into acting?

It would kind of vary it depending on what age they are, ’cause an older person getting into acting knows very well who they are, but if I’m talking to a younger actor who’s just starting, I’d say getting to know yourself in the way you would approach yourself as a character; what are your likes, dislikes, fears, sensitivities, where do you feel nerves, sometimes people feel nervous in their brains, sometimes in their chest, sometimes in their feet. And then bring all those attributes to different characters. And along with that, go to improv class, go to an improv class and, and work that brain and muscle of performing, uh, off the fly. But you’ll find out that performing is really just kind of what we’re doing right now.
